#SCBDExclusive: Say #cheers to #May with Sipping Rum Friday’s

scbdexclusive

If you know me, you know I love good rum to sip on or enjoy in a cocktail. If you’re the same way, I have good news. Santa Teresa (mentioned in my February Foodie Favorites), Venezuela’s oldest rum producer with a family heritage dating two centuries, announces that its flagship rum, Santa Teresa “1796,” is the focus of a FREE weekly tasting series at Union Square Wines & Spirits.  Located at 140 Fourth Ave. at 13 St., the tastings will be held on four Friday evenings: May 10, May 17, May 24 and May 31, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.  At “Sipping Rum Fridays,” attendees can sip Santa Teresa “1796” neat, on the rocks or in classic cocktails.

Santa Teresa Sipping

“We are delighted to partner with Union Square Wines & Spirits to introduce their discerning customers to the velvety charms of Santa Teresa ‘1796,’ our flagship rum, through this tasting series,” said Daniela Curiel, Brand Manager, Santa Teresa Rum.  “As an aged rum, it’s perfect for sipping or even pairing with foods like chocolate.  It takes classic cocktails, from daiquiris to nightcaps, to a whole new level.  It’s also an ideal gift, with Mother’s Day and Father’s Day coming up.”

Check out the line-up below and pick a Friday to come out, relax, and sip some rum at Union Square Wines & Spirits:

May 10: Happy Mother’s Day!

  • This tasting pairs mom’s favorite gift, chocolate, with Santa Teresa “1796” Rum.  This match made in heaven will be led by Santa Teresa Off-Premise Brand Ambassador Isabella Izquierdo.
May 17: Save the Daiquiri!
  • So you think you know daiquiris?  Experience a whole new libation when Santa Teresa “1796” is used as the base spirit.  Carla Verenzuela, Santa Teresa On-Premise Brand Ambassador and Bartender, will lead this spirited tasting that rethinks a favorite summer tipple.
May 24: Dare to Sip a Nightcap!
  • What’s the most civilized way to gently conclude an evening?  By sipping a nightcap, of course!  This tasting by Santa Teresa Brand Ambassador Daniela Curiel will offer Santa Teresa “1796” neat, on the rocks and in nightcap-style cocktails.
May 31: Happy Father’s Day!
  • Does dad really want (or need) another tie, polo shirt or extra golf balls for Father’s Day?  Show him that you really care by presenting him with a Santa Teresa “1796” gift set that will set him aglow.  Santa Teresa Brand Ambassador Daniela Curiel will pour Santa Teresa “1796” neat and on the rocks.

#SCBDEvent Recap: Review with the crew at Johnny Utah’s, NYC

scbdeventflyer01

About two weeks ago I had the pleasure of having the “Review with the crew” event which included seeing the Bar-Top Bandit’s at Johnny Utah’s in NYC. Our beer writer, Stephanie, her boyfriend Eric, and one of our new team member’s Alexandra joined me. Johnny Utah’s is a fun, country-themed restaurant & bar in the heart of Rockefeller Center.

review with the crew

We got in just in time before the Bandits started performing and decided to order some of their $5 margaritas, beer, nachos, and wings. We enjoyed all our appetizers– the nachos were the perfect side for all of us. We decided to try the BBQ wings and they were cooked to perfection and had just enough kick. After downing a margarita or two, I had the craving for Mac ‘N’ Cheese and it was probably some of the best Mac ‘N’ Cheese that I’ve had because it was so cheesy and not too heavy on breading. It was also the perfect amount.

It was the perfect night out, filled with food, fun, and entertainment. I also got to interview, Theresa Fowler, ‘The Boss Bandit’ and got the dish on their performances at Johnny Utah’s every Wednesday and more!

SCBD: When did the Bandits start?
TF: I created the Bar-Top Bandits in September, 2010 with childhood friend Everett Brothers. It started as a fundraiser for an amazing soldier, SPC Brendan Marrocco, who lost his arms & legs in Iraq. The event was such a success, it led to us helping out other local charities and organizations, which resulted in us expanding our show to what it is now!
BarTopBanditsSandyHookNJ
SCBD: Where do you perform?
TF: We have been touring the Northeast, rocking bar-tops from Times Square to the Meatpacking District in NYC, to Hampton Beach, NH & Asbury Park, NJ!
BanditsAtFixx
SCBD: What should we look forward to at Johnny Utah’s?
TF: Killer Female Vocalists and Dancers from the Broadway stage to the iTunes charts performing in NYC’s Hottest Country Western Bar!
SCBD: What’s your favorite dish at Johnny Utah’s?
TF: Bandit favorites are “The Buffalo Bill,” “The Calamity Jane” Cubano, the Nachos, the Southern Hushpuppies and the Hot Utah Wings.
SCBD: The best cocktail?
TF: We’re whiskey girls at heart, but we hear Johnny Utah’s bartenders make a mean Blue Long Island! They’ve got the best staff around, and we have a blast with them at every show!
Bar-Top Bandits
SCBD:  What makes the Bandits different than any performers?
TF: The Bar-Top Bandits are a unique nightlife event with some of the most talented female performing artists in New York City. We are a boot-stomping, hair-flipping, bottle-tossing, girl-powered show with the hottest and most unique approach to nightlife entertainment. Not only do our Bandits have powerhouse vocalists and insanely choreographed routines, but they specialize in mixology and hospitality. Pushing liquor and beer sales throughout the show results in nightly revenue boosts for venues who book the Bandits!
Don’t have plans for tomorrow night? Make sure you go to Johnny Utah’s and see them perform. Also, don’t forget to ‘like’ the Bandit’s on Facebook, here.

Craft Beer Heaven at the NYC Craft Beer Festival!

So on a sunny little day in March, I journeyed to a lovely large place that had a wonderful sign posted outside the front welcoming craft beer enthusiasts from all regions of the states.

As I walk into the Lexington Armory – I stop dead in my tacks.

I look to my co-worker and said, “I think we found beer heaven.”

beer heaven

She agreed and we made our grand entrance into the wild brew-gallery of the most unique and delicious crafts beers New York City has ever seen.

Now, as a young millennial, I am searching for the latest and greatest in the craft beer world. I admit that cider is my go-to treat, but after this festival my brew-knowledge was lifted to a whole new level of deliciousness.

A few of my favorite tastings/experiences include:

McKenzie’s Hard Cider – Lazy Lemonade

The House of Shandy – Curious Traveler

And of course…

Angry Orchard! But I already tried that one C;

Moving on, we grabbed ourselves the most delicious pretzel I have ever had. No seriously, this pretzel must have been caressed by the most delicious beers while baking to a crisp.

I obviously could not contain myself and started eating before I snapped a picture. #sorrynotsorry

Many of the tables had a representative from the brewing company! I was able to meet the representative for Angry Orchard and I could not be more exited. I give the festival a 4.5 out of a 5 start rating – the only thing I would have liked to see is the similar beers/ciders near each other to make it a little easier to navigate, other than that it was a complete success!

When the day was over we left with our complementary beer/shot glass, we were absolutely over the moon and left with wonderful memories of delicious craft beers.

I will be attending next year and already can’t wait!

Seriously, do not miss out. I will see you there! (:

You will see me again soon, my good Sir’s.

#SCBDFavorite: One Pot Dinners Cooking Class at Sur La Table, Hell’s Kitchen

scbdfavorite

For my birthday this year I got a gift certificate to take a cooking class at Sur La Table in Hell’s Kitchen, NYC. I looked at the schedule and the One Pot Dinners presented by Food & Wine Magazine sounded like an awesome class plus it came with a one year subscription to Food & Wine magazine.

The class started at 11:00 am in the studio kitchen in the store. We were greeted by our instructor Giselle and her assistants, who grabbed us a cup of coffee. Giselle told us a bit about herself and how she went to culinary school and how when she’s not teaching she is a pastry chef at Momofoku Milk Bar. After she explained how the class worked and gave us a packet with the recipes we’d be making in class.

photo 3

My favorite recipe we made.

We started the class making an easy Mexican Chicken Pozole Verde. Giselle would show us how to do each step and assist us along with the help of her assistants. It was a great class and each team worked together really well. After the Pozole, we made my personal favorite– Beef & Vegetable Potpie with Cheddar Biscuits, followed by Rice Pilaf with Chorizo, Olives & Fennel, and last, Smoky Paella with Shrimp & Squid.

Cooking in class at Sur La Table, Hell’s Kitchen NYC

We took a little break while some of the entrees cooked and had a tour of the store with our instructor Giselle. She told us what she recommended we purchase and what was used during class. We could also buy what we wanted then, but most of us waited until class ended. After our little tour, we came back to class and finished preparing then eating all the dishes. As I mentioned, my favorite was Beef & Vegetable Potpie with Cheddar Biscuits, it was delicious and perfect for a meal. It’s definitely a dish I’d love to conquer myself one night!

If you ever decide to take a class at Sur La Table, a huge plus is that all students receive a 10% off coupon that is good for a week. Since I still had money on my gift card, it definitely gave me an upper hand. I decided to purchase my very own food processor and scraper to add to my kitchen collection.

I’d highly recommend a cooking class at Sur La Table to any beginner in the kitchen, they really help you out and all the dishes are pretty easy. They have many cooking studio locations throughout New York and New Jersey and  have a huge roster of classes, you can see, here. They also aren’t costly and range between $55-99 which is not bad for a professional cooking class.

Plan on taking a class at Sur La Table?

Let me know what you thoughts here or tweet me @smchickbigdeals!

Happy Cooking! 😀

#SCBDExclusive: Behind The Scenes & Lunch at DBGB Kitchen & Bar

scbdexclusive

A saying I’ve learned to live by and well have always lived by is: when a good opportunity comes around, you should take it. Well almost two weeks ago, I was invited to go see the prep kitchen and get a behind the scenes look to the charcuterie and pastry program to Daniel Boulud‘s restaurants in New York City. I was invited to go with a guest so, SCBD team member Kelsey Jelling came with me. We could not put down this once in a lifetime opportunity and it was definitely a day to remember.

When we arrived to the prep kitchen in the East Village we were greeted by Lauren, who does the pr for all of the Daniel Boulud restaurants in the city. We were welcomed to enjoy some complimentary coffee & pastries before our tour began. I made sure I tried a croissant and some coffee and it did not disappoint. I was ready for the tour to begin.

bts dbgb

Our tour began by seeing where all the breads are made and packaged including making our own baguettes (which was the best baguette I ever tasted thus far). We also where the pastries are made and maintained before the charcuterie part of our class began. I was definitely starting to crave all the sweets I was seeing.

bts 2

Next, it was time to see the charcuterie department. We started off by seeing where some of the casing was done but then we went into the ‘cold’ room where all the important stuff goes down. We saw a how they make their famous rilette which we also got try and it was a delicious! A rilette is a mix of braised pork shank that was slow cooked for 48 hours, roasted vegetables, oil and seasonings.

64760_10151257840435588_299861427_n

After we finished with the charcuterie part of the class, it was time for my favorite part, our lunch on the house at DBGB Kitchen and Bar. I’ve heard so many great things about Daniel Boulud‘s cooking and after attending the class I knew what I wanted to try. We started off with cocktails, since Kelsey and I both liked fruity cocktails, our waiter recommended The Dicken’s which was fruity with a bit of spice but was delicious and I’d definitely get it again.

photo 5photo 1

65510_10151257840970588_601471223_n

While we were looking over the menu and picking out our appetizers, we also got to meet Daniel Boulud, we were so in awe we didn’t take a picture with him but it was surely an honor. For my appetizer, I  tried the Fried Egg and Wild Mushroom Appetizer which was delicious and creamy, it was a perfect balance of egg and mushrooms. I decided to try the famous DBGD Dog, especially after learning about how all their hot dogs & sausages are made in-house, I was crazy not to! It certainly did not disappoint and was served with some delicious homemade fries. We also got a complimentary sausage de jamon sent from the kitchen, which was great!

The Chocolate Only Cake

We were getting so full, but could not turn down dessert so I decided to get the ‘Chocolate Only’ Cake which is by far the lightest, most heavenly piece of chocolate cake I’ve ever had. It was a fun-filled, food day that I would never forget and I would love to come back and eat at DBGB Kitchen and Bar again!
